With our ‘Psoriasis Walk and Talk’ groups, we aim to provide social connectivity and support for people with psoriasis in an informal, inclusive setting.

Psoriasis ‘Walk and Talk’ groups were originally developed as part of a study at Royal Free Hospital in London by Poppy Scheinmann and Shannon McCann, under the supervision of Dr Sandy McBride.

Prior to the study, there was little exploration of peer support networks for people with psoriasis – this is despite significant benefits being recorded for walking groups for other specific health conditions.

Starting in 2027, Psoriasis UK is delighted to be taking the project further, rolling it out across the UK to strengthen the psoriasis community.

Walk and Talk FAQs

Why ‘Walk and Talk’?

  1. People with psoriasis can experience greater social isolation than the general population*
This can lead to poor physical and mental health.

  2. Previous studies indicate that people with psoriasis are keen to meet other people with psoriasis
Studies suggest many have never met anyone else with the same condition.

  3. People with psoriasis can be more inactive than the general population**
This can contribute to co-existent health issues and psoriasis severity.

*‘People living with psoriasis are more socially isolated’ (Ramsay and O’reagan, 1988)

**‘People living with psoriasis can be more inactive than the general population which contributes to co-existent health issues and psoriasis severity’ (Frankel et al., 2012),

What were the results of the original study?

The walks were light, hour-long group walks that took place every two weeks and were led by people with psoriasis who had undergone a special training programme with Ramblers.

The study found that:

  • Peer-led group walking is a feasible and acceptable social interaction
  • The walk and talk group protected against evaluation-related social anxiety
  • Walk and talk groups may address emotional, physical and social challenges
  • Suggested modifications were a conversational structure, adjustment for physical needs and sub-group walks.
